In Japan, the exchange of business cards (Meishi Tokan) is an essential, ritualistic act embedded within the corporate culture. It has remained largely unchanged for decades, serving primarily as a formal means to obtain contact information. Connect was conceived to transform this routine interaction into a potent tool for building lasting professional engagement. By utilizing Near Field Communication (NFC) technology embedded in a beautifully designed physical card, Connect enables users to share their profile instantly with a simple tap on a smartphone. Beyond the convenience of digital data transfer, the true value of Connect lies in creating a "WoW" moment during the initial encounter, significantly elevating the user's first impression and ensuring they are not forgotten.
Why We Started
The inspiration for Connect arose from my lifestyle as a digital nomad, constantly seeking ways to minimize physical belongings while moving between global locations. Even small items like paper business cards felt like unnecessary clutter. Around 2018, as NFC became standard in major smartphones, I began using a digital business card from a UK-based startup. Initially, I used it simply as a paper replacement, but I soon realized that the act of tapping a phone to exchange info—still rare at the time—created genuine surprise and curiosity. I recognized that this interaction itself was a powerful form of engagement, fulfilling the underlying goal of business card exchange far more effectively than traditional methods. Seeing the immense potential in Japan's ritualistic card culture, I decided to launch a tailored solution for the Japanese market.
How We Launched
Differentiating from existing services, we intentionally eliminated the mandatory account registration process for recipients to streamline the interaction. Leveraging previous development experience with NFC technology, the software integration proceeded smoothly. We channeled a significant portion of our resources into graphic and packaging design, ensuring that owning and using a Connect card felt premium and desirable. We established a corporate entity in Japan and developed a marketing strategy focused on enhancing professional engagement rather than just digitizing information. From initial interaction design to the physical unboxing experience, every touchpoint was meticulously crafted to maximize the visual and emotional impact of the exchange.

Key Learnings
While we anticipated a natural demand due to Japan's intensive business card culture, market entry revealed the profound difficulty of altering deeply established cultural behaviors. We learned that many professionals prioritize the administrative ease of managing received information over the strategic value of the exchange itself. Overcoming this inertia requires continuously educating the market that the primary goal of exchanging cards is strengthening engagement, not just transferring data.
